Kid-Friendly Stays

Skip Italy Hotels for These Family-Friendly Airbnbs

by Jessica Pawl

A family trip to Italy is a dream for many families—but finding accommodations that truly cater to kids can be a challenge. Hotels might offer convenience, but they often fall short when it comes to space, flexibility and that home-away-from-home feeling young families need. (And in Europe, even the strict guest limits can quickly become an issue.)

Whether you’re navigating the canals of Venice, exploring Tuscan countryside, discovering the charm of Florence, or soaking up the scenic beauty of the Northern Lakes, a family-friendly vacation rental can make all the difference. And the best news is that we’ve researched, found and stayed in four STUNNING options, all of which we whole-heartedly recommend.

(If you’re wondering if we’ve stayed at some that didn’t make the cut? Yes, yes we have.)

These homes offer kid-friendly amenities like full kitchens, outdoor play space, and separate sleeping areas so everyone (yes, even the grown-ups!) can rest well after a day of adventures, and epic views to soak up post-kiddo bedtime. More than just a place to sleep, each stay gives families the freedom to settle in, spread out and experience Italy at their own pace.

Amazing Family Vacation Rentals in Italy

Florence: You wouldn’t need much more than this balcony with its gorgeous Brunellschi Dome views, but this centrally-located rental (near the carousel!) also offers a tiny elevator to help with luggage, a full kitchen, sprawling penthouse terrace and two separate and super spacious bedrooms. Venice: The listing barely acknowledges these epic canal views, which completely delighted my three-year old. A spacious bathroom, two bedrooms, and cozy (small) living room and kitchen round out this ground-floor apartment that’s wonderfully convenient in location and off the beaten path at the same time. More details here.

Tuscany (Pienza): An old watch tower-turned farm-turned vacation rental, the views from this hilltop Airbnb–overlooking an olive grove–are the dreamiest. A completely new kitchen sits on the lowest level with a bedroom and bath, while the original upper floor offers a tiny kitchen, antique living area, lovely dining room, bath and two bedrooms. A lovely walking path means that you don’t need to drive into Old Town where you’ll find a playground, shops and cafes. More details on Airbnb.

Northern Lakes (Orta San Guilio): Sandwhiched in the middle of a pedestrian-only Old Town, this charming apartment has bee modernized beautifully and offers the most scenic balconies overlooking the town square, docks and legendary San Guilio Island. Two bedrooms, a full kitchen, comfortable dining area and parking make it a great fit for families. But the real surprise is access (for a daily fee) to a private, grassy waterside lot where we swam, sunbathed and napped all afternoon. More details here.
